Ruto Speaks on Lawyer on Practicing as a Lawyer in The Future

Deputy President William Ruto on Wednesday jokingly indicated that he could as well take a career in law in the future.

Speaking at the official opening of the African Bar Association (AFBA) annual summit, the DP thanked the organizers for gifting President Uhuru Kenyatta and him with a 'gown' and certificate of honour.

While noting that Uhuru was not able to officially open the summit due to exigencies of duties, Ruto indicated that he really appreciated the gifts from AFBA.

"I want to be grateful to the AFBA for two gifts, one is this beautiful gown. I have been told by their president that I can keep it. I am very grateful.

"I am also grateful for the certificate given to me. It is good that it was given in front of the Chief Justice and the Chairperson of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Allen Gichuhi.

"I intend to use the certificate to file for my practicing (as a lawyer). Hopefully, it will get me somewhere in the process of application," the DP stated drawing thunderous laughter from the crowd.

However, he clarified that he was already well informed that the certificate and the gown were honorary hence could not be used for practice in the legal profession.

The DP also promised that the executive was working to ensure Chief Justice David Maraga's request for sufficient funding of the Judiciary was implemented.

Although Ruto noted that at times the government is pressed on sharing out the limited resources, he highlighted that: "The legal profession wields great influence and its contribution will propel agenda 2063 and firm up our development paradigm and agenda. We must never and we will not leave behind a functioning judiciary".

"I am sure that we will have a solution, Mr Chief Justice. We are engaging. We agree that the Judiciary has an important role to play," Ruto emphasized.

"We will ensure that all the arms of the government are moving together because, without any arm of the government, it is not possible to deliver our mandate to the people of Kenya," the DP concluded.
