Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has unveiled two new courtesy buses to be used by schools and residents of the county at no cost.
While launching the project, Kinyanjui explained that among its key objectives were to ensure that public schools channel funds towards crucial facilities such as laboratories.
He noted that basic facilities in several schools were in a deplorable condition yet the management of some schools placed undue focus on the purchase of buses.
Kinyanjui advised institutions to direct money towards worthwhile ventures as academic performance was being affected negatively by the unnecessary expenditures.
“I want institutions and even members of the public to use funds for more urgent needs and let us provide transport when it is needed. This a great way to live as a community,” he announced.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Nakuru County Communications Director Beatrice Obwocha disclosed that the buses would also be made available to residents who faced challenges in logistics for important events such as funerals.
She noted that a transparent application process would be put in place to ensure the buses were allocated to groups who actually needed them rather than those capable of using other means to travel.
"It's not just for schools. You know many people face a challenge when they have to go for events such as burials.
"We cannot just allocate the buses to anybody, we will look at those who are in need. There is a process," she elucidated.
Kinyanjui had stated that the acquisition was made possible by a Sh300 million improvement in revenue collection for the past financial year.
With city status beckoning, he highlighted the need for Nakuru to have infrastructure worthy of the title.
“When Nakuru is named a city, I want us to actually have the infrastructure and development worthy of the status,” the Governor noted.
