President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for a Jubilee Party crisis meeting over the ensuing standoff on 16% fuel levy.
Uhuru will host a Jubilee Parliamentary Group meeting on Tuesday morning at State House moments before a special sitting in Parliament to discuss the matter.
“Please note that we will hold a Parliamentary Group Meeting on Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at State House Nairobi at 8:00 am sharp,” an invitation text by Majority leader Aden Duale read.
He will be seeking support for his proposed 8% tax on petroleum products which he lowered from the current 16%.
The Head of State intends for Jubilee legislators to capitalise on the special sittings on Tuesday and Thursday to pass his proposal.
According to The Star, Uhuru wants to sign the amended bill into law before he jets out on Friday to attend the UN General Assembly in New York.
“It will be a tough session at State House but we believe the MPs will understand the economic challenges the country is facing at hand to endorse Uhuru’s proposal,” a top official in Jubilee remarked.
National Assembly Minority leader John Mbadi disclosed that they had also called for a NASA Parliamentary Group meeting on Tuesday to deliberate on the same.
On Friday, parliamentarians were called for a special session by Speaker Justin Muturi after the President rejected the Finance Bill 2018.
The Bill, that he returned to parliament, had also retained a cap on commercial lending rates after lawmakers amended a move by the Treasury CS Henry Rotich to repeal it.
