Parliament to Debate Making Uhuru-Raila Handshake Day National Holiday

Parliament is set to discuss the possibility of introducing a new holiday after it received a petition from a citizen.

The petition by Paul Mugo before the National Assembly seeks to amend the constitution by making the Handshake deal of March 9 between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga, a National holiday.

Mugo wants to Article 9(3) of the Constitution which stipulates the national holidays to be changed to include the date.

The appeal will be presented before the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee which will go through it before presenting it to the House as reported by Nation.

According to the House rules, the committee has 60 days to submit the report on their deliberations.

The petitioner argued that the day marked a day of peace that had been lacking for years.

"Of great importance is the concerted effort by both government and the opposition towards achievement of the Big Four Agenda and realization of the desired socio-economic and political development in the country," read a part of the petition.

The two leaders decided to bury the hatchet after the disputed 2017 polls and agreed to foster unity and cohesion in the country.

Following the historic moment, Uhuru noted that the peace deal showed that no individual is greater than the country.

Raila echoed the president's sentiments and pointed out that as leaders, there was need to secure the future for the future generations through unity.
