Multiple Casualties After Al Shabaab Ambush Police

Al Shabaab militants ambushed a police camp in Ijara Garissa county on Sunday night but their efforts were thwarted, leaving multiple casualties.

The militants, whose exact number remains unknown, struck the Rural Border Patrol Unit shortly after 11:00 pm and started shooting indiscriminately.

The officers responded swiftly and were able to run the militants out of their camp and are now trailing them using blood stains.

Northeastern Regional Commissioner Mohamed Birik confirmed that no officer was killed or injured in the attack.

A police officer based in the area said the militants wanted to carry out a simultaneous attack on the police camp and a communication mast.

The region has borne the brunt of Al Shabaab militants due to its proximity to Boni forest and Somalia.

The increased movement of the militants towards the Kenya-Somali border led the Kenya Police to issue a terror alert in October.

Our officers are on high alert, monitoring their movements so as to counter any attempts by these criminals to cross over to the country to cause fear and despondency” read the press release.

Later that month, 24 Al Shabaab fighters were killed by a squad of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in Bilis Qooqani, in the southern part of Somalia.

The police have called upon members of the public, particularly those living along the border, to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement by individuals or groups to any nearest security personnel.
