DPP Directs Release of 8 Ambira Boys Students Arrested Over Exam Cheating

The 8 Ambira Boys Students who had been arrested over allegations of exam cheating and insulting Education CS Amina Mohammed and her Interior counterpart Fred Matiang’i have been released.

This is after the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji withdrew the charges issued against them.

The judgment was passed when they appeared before Resident Magistrate Gladys Adhiambo in Ukwala Law Court, Siaya County.

State Prosecutor David Okachi told the court that the DPP had received the minors’ file but opted to issue charges against them when he was ready to do so.

The former students were, however, asked to cooperate with the police during the ongoing investigations.

The eight were arrested after a video in which they were seen hurling insults at the two cabinet secretaries went viral.

This elicited criticism from many Kenyans, with President Uhuru Kenyatta promising that the boys would not escape the law.

"You can brag about cheating. We will show you what the State does with cheats," Uhuru stated during his speech at the Kenya Scouts Association Patron Day.

Their arrest sparked mixed reactions with many expressing that the move was uncalled for as the students were mature enough to realise their wrongs.

The 2018 KCSE candidates have been in cells since November 23, 2018, when they were apprehended by the law enforcement agencies.
