How Raila Unmasked Matiang'i Impostor in Dubai

As investigations into the fake gold saga continue, new details are emerging of the sequence of events that transpired before the major crackdown that was witnessed earlier in the month.

So far, the information in the public domain showed that Interior CS Fred Matiang'i's name was used to execute the scam by the fraudsters.

On Monday, a report on The Standard, indicated that the Dubai ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was alerted that he was being scammed after a meeting with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The publication conveyed that Raila flew to Dubai and met the Sheikh who asked for his help to have his gold consignment released from JKIA.

In the meeting, a Kenyan man who was facilitating the transaction was introduced to Raila and his scheme quickly collapsed from there.

The man made a call to another one purporting to be CS Matiang'i to check on the status of the consignment.

It was during this phone call that Raila noticed the voice did not match that of the CS.

“He put the phone on a loudspeaker and when Raila heard the voice of the other party, he intervened and declared it was not the CS. This ended the conversation,” The Standard quoted the official familiar with the case.

It is at this point that Raila raised the alarm informing Sheikh Maktoum that he had been defrauded and assured that he would direct the matter to the Kenyan officials.

Raila is the one who brought the gold scam to President Uhuru Kenyatta's attention when he flew back to Kenya and informed him of the saga.
