Drunk Man Dies in Nairobi Prison After Failing to Raise Ksh 200 Bail

A 27-year-old man died at the Industrial Area Prison last week ,a few days after he failed to pay a Ksh 200 fine that would secure his release.

Mark Nyamweya had been charged with being drunk and disorderly at a Madaraka court, where he pleaded guilty.

He was fined Ksh 200 with an alternative fine of seven days in custody but he failed to raise the money.

Reports indicated that the man later complained of stomach ache and diarrhoea while at the facility and was attended to by a prison warder, who gave him medication and some porridge.

“He felt bad, complained of stomach problems. He was vomiting and had diarrhoea before he died," the source disclosed.

The family divulged that they did not know about Nyameya's arrest until after his death.

James Ongondi, a man who had been detained together with the deceased, stated that they were arrested at Moloini Club in Kayole, on Saturday morning.

"We were 43 at the time of arrest but others were released at the police station,” he stated.

The family is now demanding answers from prison authorities and Soweto Police Station in Kayole, so as to know what caused Nyamweya's death.
