Woman Fined Ksh1 Million for Wearing This Bangle

A Spanish woman was arrested at JKIA on Monday for wearing a bangle weighing approximately 0.0025 grams.

Officials from the KWS noted that Pich-Aguilera Maria, 50, was wearing a bangle made of ivory, which is illegal in Kenya.

The accused was nabbed as she was travelling from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam and arraigned at the JKIA Law Court.

She pleaded guilty and was fined Ksh1 million with an alternative of 12 months in jail.

According to Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), after securing her release, Maria immediately proceeded with her journey to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

"Maria paid Ksh1 million fine and proceeded with her journey to Dar es Salaam. She had pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal possession of ivory and was fined Ksh1 million or 12 months imprisonment in default," KWS tweeted.

In another case, a French national, Laazibi Amal, was also fined Ksh1 million for being in possession of an ivory bangle weighing 0.85 grams.

Amal, just like Maria, was transiting through JKIA

In 2018, a Chinese national, Zhang Ninighua, 52,  was arrested at JKIA with two elephant ivory bangles weighing 150gm.

The bangles had been concealed inside the suspect’s check-in bag.
