Kibra Showdown Live Blog: Full Coverage of the Highly Contested Poll

For months now, Kibra has been locked in a vicious campaign battle pitting three top contenders for the Parliamentary seat; Benard Imran Okoth (ODM), McDonald Mariga (Jubilee Party) and Eliud Owalo (ANC) from a list of twenty aspirants.

The day is finally here when Kibra residents go to the ballot to choose who will replace the late Ken Okoth who died on July 26, after a long battle with colon cancer.

In this Live Blog, Kenyans.co.ke gives you up-to-the-minute coverage of the highly anticipated mini poll: 

08:06 a.m.: The Returning Officer for the Kibra mini poll declares ODM's Okoth Bernard Otieno the validly elected MP for Kibra Constituency after garnering 24,636 votes. Jubilee candidate MacDonald Mariga comes second with 11,280 votes.

00:30 a.m. Friday, November 8: IEBC yet to release provisional results.

22: 50 p.m.: Jubilee's McDonald Mariga concedes early defeat to ODM's Imran Okoth way before the final tally is released by the electoral body, IEBC. In a video that has since gone viral, Mariga calls Imran to congratulate him on seemingly lead in the race that attracted 24 candidates from the political divide.

Mariga: "Hello boss, this is Mariga, I have called to congratulate you. The race has been fair and I am ready to support you in whatever you need." 

Imran: "I'm humbled to have received a congratulatory call from Mariga. That’s the spirit of politics. I promise to move forward with every interested party for the good of our people. God bless Kibra.

9:17 p.m.: Results started trickling in, according to Citizen TV, and 7 polling stations already posted their final tallies. McDonald Mariga - 315, Imran Okoth - 582, Eliud Owalo - 130.

6:10 p.m.: IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati and the acting CEO Marjan Hussein visited a polling station just before closure and were assured that the voting process has been smooth.

5:25 p.m.: Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa roughed up in Kibra while speaking to the press. Altercation brodcast on Live TV.

5:00 p.m.: Polls close in Kibra; IEBC officials set to start counting ballots with election results set to be announced before midnight. Any voters still in the queue would be allowed to vote.

4: 55 p.m.:  In a video that has since gone viral, McDonald Mariga arrived at Ayany Primary School Polling Station reportedly in the company of police, however, residents at the polling station shooed him away. Gunshots were heard as his entourage drove away from the scene.

4:45 p.m.: Joy Midivo, Executive Director East Africa for Law & Justice: "I believe there is an issue of voter apathy where Kibra residents may have intentionally decided to sit this one out"

4:31 p.m.: Calm restored at Mashimoni squatters, Kibra Constituency Police are vigilant and are ensuring the process is continuing on smoothly

2:39 p.m.: A bizarrely dressed man, Ochieng Abich, got frustrated after finding his name missing on the voter's register while maintaining that he was a registered voter.

13:30 p.m.: McDonald Mariga arrived in Kibra in style while riding his posh H2 Hummer to the jubilation of the area residents. "Those of us who have lived outside the country have not got a chance to vote or register as voters. When I get elected, I will champion to have Kenyans living abroad to get a chance to vote and represent the country.," stated Mariga.

1:00 p.m.: Heavy Police force was deployed in different parts of Kibra most notably the DC Grounds where a clash ensued over bribery claims.

12:57 p.m.: Dagoretti South MP John "KJ" Kiarie dispels claims that there was tension in Kibra while speaking to the press at Joseph Kang'ethe Primary School polling station. "The voter in Nairobi is way smarter than we may think. Voting is going on very peacefully, Kibra is not on fire."

Jubilee Senator Aaron Cheruiyot took issue with claims by ODM that their supporters had chased away Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi for allegedly dissuading residents from voting. "We have to have a conversation as a country after this," he urged.

11:24 a.m.: Deputy President William Ruto weighed in on bribery allegations and claims of violence in some polling stations. "The people of Kibra have turned up in numbers to vote for their MP resisting the violence narrative by our opponents. Peaceful voting is going on in many polling centres and Security officers are on alert to deal with acts of lawlessness. Change is imminent! Mungu mbele," Ruto posted on Twitter.

11:20 a.m.: ODM leader Raila Odinga casts his vote at Old Kibra Primary on Thursday, November 7 while Jubilee candidate McDonald Mariga escorted a disabled voter on a wheelchair to a polling station in Lindi. Odinga decried cases of voter bribing reported in the morning and urged ODM supporters to "protect the bedroom" a phrase that has now been used to depict the image of Kibra being Odm's stronghold. 

11:14 a.m.: IEBC official arrested in Woodley for allegedly bribing voters, Nairobi Area police boss Philip Ndolo confirms.

10:43 a.m:  ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi: I would like to state that this is a very important day for the people of Kibra. We look forward to IEBC to ensure that we have a free and fair election. There have been incidents of intimidation in some areas like Mashimoni. 

10:31 a.m.: IEBC warns Kibra voters against violating the secrecy of the ballot by sharing photos of marked vote papers, says offence is punishable in law.

10:27 a.m.: ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and his party's candidate Eliud Owalo arrive at Old Kibra Primary school where Owalo cast his vote.

ODM  candidate Imran Okoth also cast his vote at Kibera Primary School at around the same time.

10:15 a.m.: Homa Bay Women Rep Gladys Wanga: There is no cause for worry with IEBC deciding not to transmit the results electronically, we just want the forms to be brought and the process to be transparent.

10:08 a.m.: Two people, a man, and woman, accused of bribing voters at a polling station in Kibra arrested, Nairobi Area police boss Philip Ndolo says.

9:51 a.m.: The late Ken Okoth's mother, Angeline Ajwang, arrives at Old Kibra primary school to cast her vote.

9:42 a.m.: ODM Chairman John Mbadi in Mashimoni, "I am here (in Kibra) purposely following the earlier incident where an individual was seen bribing voters. In regard to voting, IEBC is falling short as residents are complaining that their names are not in the registers."

9:35 a.m.: Raila's daughter Winnie Odinga voted in Kibra Primary school. "I encourage everyone to come out, cast their votes and remain vigilant. We are here to not only vote, but also to protect our vote," she stated.

8:50 a.m: Late Ken Okoth's Wife, Monica Okoth, arrives at Kibera Primary School and votes in the ongoing by-elections.

8:40 a.m.: Embakasi East MP Babu Owino arrives at Kibra's Mashimoni polling station. Didmus Barasa was also reportedly present at the event. "There was a person bribing voters but amenyoroshwa," stated Babu

8:08 a.m.: An IEBC official, Janet Ongera, told NTV that four KIEMS kits in four polling stations were not working.

8:05 a.m: Woodley Kenyatta Golf Course MCA  Mwangi Njihia casts his vote during the ongoing Kibra by-election at St. Joseph Kang'ethe Primary School.

8:00 a.m.: Commotion arose after claims that an individual attempted to bribe voters. Angry residents wanted to lynch him but the police saved him and he was taken under custody.  (scroll down for a video).

7:50 a.m: KIEMS Kit at the Jamhuri Primary school not working. Voting hampered from 6 a.m.

6:08 a.m.: ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna told Citizen TV that the party was satisfied with the set-up of the by-elections and had spread its agents in polling stations.

6:00 a.m.: IEBC officials opened polling stations in Kibra ready for the exercise's commencement on Thursday, November 7.

Quick Facts

There are 118,658 registered voters in Kibra.

IEBC on October 28, released data for each ward in Kibra as follows: Laini Saba 17,455 voters, Lindi 16,688, Makina 25,695, Woodley/ Kenyatta Golf Course 28,066 and Sarangombe 30,754.

IEBC also relocated of some 26,788 voters registered in 36 polling stations for coinciding with KCSE exam centers.

The contestants are battling to replace the late Ken Okoth who passed away on Friday July 26, 2019, at The Nairobi Hospital after battling stage four cancer.

There is a total of 24 candidates battling out for the constituency's seat.
