Former Masinde Muliro University VC Dies

Former Masinde Muliro University VC Fredrick Otieno passed on Tuesday, December 17, 2019.

Citizen Digital was the first to report that Otieno, suffered a stroke in hospital.

He had been admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Tophill Hospital.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya is reported to be among those who had visited the educationalist on Sunday, December 15.

Otieno's five-year term at the university ended on November 30, 2018, after corruption claims.

On December 8 2018, Daily Nation reported that officials in the institution's chapter of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA) pushed for his removal.

They accused him of victimising those critical of his administration's track record.

Further, the unions called on the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) to probe corruption in the university.

In his response, the vice chancellor claimed that the officials were being used by cartels to undermine his administration.
