Babu Owino Released From Prison

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was on Tuesday, January 28, released from detention at the Industrial Area Remand Prison.

This was after he managed to post his first installment of Ksh2.5 million cash bail.

On January 27, the legislator was granted a cash bail of Ksh10 million in his attempted murder case, with the amount set to be paid in four installments over a four-month period.

In the ruling, the court said the cash bail would be used to settle the hospital bills of victim DJ Evolve, whose real name is Felix Odhiambo Orinda.

In his ruling Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, set out several other conditions for the legislators' release, key among them being that the money would be paid to the court in four installments and will be used to clear all the bills the DJ would incur in the best medical facilities until he recovered fully.

Magistrate Andayi went on to read out several other conditions for Babu's release, one of them being his decision to bar him from consuming alcohol or any other form of narcotic for the duration of his court case.

The decision to grant the MP bail did not sit down well with most Kenyans, who went on to question Chief Justice David Maraga and his team regarding the alleged biased nature of the law.

Several banners appeared across the capital on Tuesday morning, questioning the entire judicial system following Magistrate Andayi's ruling.

'Why is the majority of inmates in Kenya the poor people? We demand a working Judiciary free of corrupt judges now!" a banner posted on Pangani outside Jubilee Party headquarters read.

Netizens on Twitter and Facebook were in support of the sentiments expressed on the banners.
