5 Die After Welcoming New Year

Five people died on the first day of 2016 in a road crash at the notorious Salgaa area along Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

The accident which took place at around 2.30am on Friday involved a bus belonging to Mbukinya company and a Toyota Ipsum bearing a Ugandan registration, the Standard reports.

The bus was heading to Nairobi from Bungoma while the saloon car was Eldoret-bound from Nakuru when the deadly collision took place.

Area police boss Joseph Mwamburi said that the driver of the saloon car was speeding at a corner, trying to overtake a lorry before ramming into the bus.

Mwamburi alleged that the some of the deceased were drunk after a night out welcoming the new year.

"It has not been established if the driver of the personal vehicle had driving license because there was no driving license recovered. It is suspected he was a young boy who did not have knowledge in driving," he added.

Mwamburi confirmed that no passenger from the bus perished while the injured were rushed to the hospital.
