A former Standard Group senior editor has passed on after a long battle with illness.
Joseph Mwega Nugi died on Thursday, May 7, while undergoing treatment at Holy Family Hospital in Githunguri, Kiambu County.
The Standard made the announcement on Friday, May 8, celebrating the life of one of their top editors since its establishment.
According to the media house, Nugi, commonly known as Joe Nugi, worked for over 20 years at the station before retiring in 1993.
He was part of the editors who worked on the then East African Standard before its name was changed to The Standard in 1977.
Nugi worked under Editor-in-Chief Ali Hafidh and Mitch Odero, but was delegated to be in charge of the newsroom as editorial chief.
He was also a pioneer of media freedom which was curtailed during the regime of the late President Daniel Arap Moi.
"He was a man of few words who was felt mostly by desk editors who sought his guidance in headline writing that was his key speciality," a tribute to Nugi reads.
The editor who went on to be a columnist for both local and international publications will be laid to rest today, Friday, May 8, at his Kiambu home.
In adherence to Covid-19 guidelines on funerals, only close family members and friends will attend his burial ceremony.
