President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to tour the Mount Kenya region for the first time after major political developments in ruling Jubilee Party, including what was seen as a purge on Deputy President William Ruto's allies.
The Head of State is expected to tour Meru County under Governor Kiraitu Murungi. However, a date has not yet been scheduled for the much-anticipated visit.
On Thursday, June 11, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i was sent to inspect projects in the region, as well as identify new projects that will revitalise Kenya's economy.
"You cannot go to the president first before we clear issues with Matiang'i and to make sure there are projects for Uhuru to come and launch.
"We want to complete some projects so that we be prepared for his visit. He promised us that he would visit and as soon as Coronavirus is curbed, we shall see to it that he tours our county," Kiraitu stated in a report aired by NTV.
Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga were reportedly forced to postpone their visit to Mount Kenya region from April to the period between June and December 2020 after learning that a section of political leaders was planning to orchestrate a rebellion against them.
The leaders who were allegedly plotting the rebellion were then aligned to DP Ruto, who has been accused of opposing the 'handshake, between the President and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Ruto had made inroads in the region and enjoyed the support of most the leaders until Kenyatta cracked the whip against the DP and his allies.
Ruto's allies also started shifting allegiance to support the President and Odinga. Laikipia Women Representative Cate Waruguru and Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere joined three other Central MPs, Kabinga Wachira (Mwea), Gichimu Githinji (Gichugu) and John Wambugu (Kirinyaga Central) in exiting Deputy President William Ruto's camp.
