Update: Friday, August 7: University of Nairobi senior lecturer Dr Ken Ouko, who succumbed to COVID-19 on August 1 was laid to rest.
Ouko was burried at his rural home in Kamuma, Nyandiwa Village in Oyugis, Homa Bay County.
The burial was done under strict guidelines of Covid-19.
The University of Nairobi has lost one of its sociology and psychology lecturers, Dr. Ken Ouko. Ouko passed away on Saturday, August 1, while admitted at Aga Khan Hospital.
UoN Communications Director John Orindi confirmed that the renowned lecturer Ouko succumbed to Coronavirus (Covid-19).
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha mourned the late as one of the best lecturers in the sociology department.
"He was much younger than me and it is sad that we have lost such a vibrant young man to the virus," Magoha stated.
His close friends took to social media to eulogise the deceased.
"Waking up to the devastating news that my big brother Dr. Ken Ouko who was a lecturer at the UoN has gone to be with the Lord. A very sad day for the larger family," William Odek posted on Facebook.
"Dr. Ken Ouko! An incredible university don! Made psychology and sociology sound so simple and practical! It is so sad that Covid-19 has cut your life short! I watched you just a few days ago on KTN," ODM official Norman Magaya tweeted.
Ken Ouko was also a TV panelist who offered advise on relationship and family matters, having specialised in Deviance and Family. He had also specialised in Gerontology.
As of Friday, July 24, 14 Covid-19 cases had been recorded at UoN. Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama stated that out of the 14, 10 are members of staff and the other four are their dependents. Four deaths had also been recorded.
Kiama postponed re-opening of the university with Education CS George Magoha later on announcing that all universities would remain closed until January 2021.
"All Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVETs) and Universities will reopen for face-to-face sessions in January 2021.
"A robust multi-sectoral approach will be employed to step up preparedness for reopening in compliance with MOH protocols on mitigating the Covid-19 effects," Magoha announced.
As of Friday, July 31, Kenya had recorded 20,636 Covid-19 positive cases, 341 fatalities and 8,165 recoveries.
