  • The family of the late Matungu MP Justus Murunga on Sunday, November 15, denied reports that the mother of the legislator passed on, a day after the son's death.

Reports on social media platforms claimed that Murunga's mother passed on soon after receiving the news of her son’s demise.

The family, while speaking to KTN News from Kakamega, dismissed the rumours.

"It is also very important to highlight that there has been some news going around that the mother to the late Justus Murunga has died, but that is not true.

"She is sick, and she has been bedridden for a while, but the mother is still alive. People should exercise caution when spreading the news about the death of the MP's mother," noted KTN News reporter Willy Lusige.

The Amani National Congress (ANC) lawmaker passed away while undergoing treatment at the St. Mary’s Mission Hospital in Mumias, Kakamega County.

Murunga was discharged from Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu County on Thursday, November 12, where he had been admitted with hypertension and diabetes.

The family's spokesman, Asman Angara, denied rumours that the MP had tested positive for the Covid-19 virus, and added that he collapsed as he was about to have his supper.

"We are getting reports that the MP died of Covid-19, but he was tested and turned out negative and there's no way the hospital would have discharged him to interact with people if he was indeed positive.

"At around 7:45 when we were about to have supper, he felt fatigued and collapsed on the staircase," he explained.

The body of the late Murunga has been transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi as per the request of Parliamentary Service Commission who will handle burial arrangements.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was among the leaders who sent messages of condolence to the family, relatives, friends and residents of Matungu Constituency following the death Murunga.
