Police were forced to use teargas on Tuesday, December 1 to disperse residents who had stormed an overturned lorry to loot beer.

The lorry overturned along the Embu-Mwea road at an area notorious for accidents with residents asking Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to mark the road.

Despite lobbing teargas the residents continued with their looting spree with the police taking time to bring the situation under control.

The accident and the looting melee caused traffic snarl-up along the busy highway. The lorry had covered both sides of the road, rendering it impassible

One of the residents, who was around the scene of the accident, initially thought the lorry was ferrying milk and was disappointed to find it had bottles of beer.

"I was on the farm when I heard a loud bang and ran to check what had happened. On reaching the scene I saw a group of youth looting from the lorry.

"I thought it was milk and asked for a packet before finding out that it was beer which I don't take," explained the eyewitness.

Residents are now asking the government to step in to put proper signage and mark the road as the festive period nears.

"I also got an accident around this spot and I urge the national government to sort out this road because we are heading to the festive period.

"The road is usually busy with vehicles ferrying miraa, vehicles from Nairobi heading to Meru and Garissa use this road," pleaded the resident.

Residents also wanted bumps to be erected on the road to reduce the speed of the vehicles in a bid to curb the rise in accidents.
