The United Democratic Party (UDA) which has been linked to Deputy President William Ruto, has announced that Bishop Margaret Wanjiru will fly the party's flag in the Nairobi gubernatorial by-election.
While also unveiling the party's headquarters, UDA party officials also announced the party’s selected candidates who will be fronted for upcoming by-elections for the Machakos Senate seat, Matungu Constituency and Kabuchai Constituency.
While making her remarks, Bishop Wanjiru stated that the party would fight to have a by-election in Nairobi, insisting that their position was based on the law.
She accused powerbrokers of plotting to avoid a by-election by installing a deputy governor who would replace Sonko as the county boss.
“Our opponents are afraid to engage us in a contest but the law must be followed. We must have a by-election and I believe our justice system will prevail and they will uphold the law.
“We don’t want side shows, we don’t want shortcuts, we want a byelection. I am ready and anyone who wants to be the Nairobi Governor must face off with me, not going through the backdoor or window," she said.
A source at the party explained that reports of the DP’s expected visit to the headquarters were false.
The UDA headquarters are located in Nairobi’s Kilimani area along Makindu Road, off Riara Road.
The office is different from the one the DP’s camp was used to at the Jubilee Headquarters but it is customised to serve the purpose.
The boardroom has the capacity to seat up to 25 members.
The building was previously used as the operation base of the Jubilee Asili outfit which has now been abandoned.
The compound is well secured with an electrical fence and a black gate and is spacious enough to host an outdoor event.
The offices are furnished with office chairs, leather sofas and other equipment.
Members allied to DP Ruto will contribute monthly payments towards rent and maintenance.
