Four suspected thugs were beaten to death by irate Liwatoni, Mombasa residents on Wednesday, March 24, after they were caught breaking into an estate.
In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the tenants of Amani Estate descended on the four with crude weapons, while chasing them around the residential area.
"Let’s lynch this thugs and let it be a lesson to all robbers," the residents shouted as they assaulted the robbers.
Police in Mombasa confirmed that the four were accosted after they broke into the estate and attempted to rob unsuspecting residents.
The law enforcers added that the gang got into the estate on motorbikes and declined to stop at a security check.
The armed thugs further stabbed a guard who was rushed to hospital after incurring critical injuries in the belly.
A second guard who witnessed the attack raised alarm and woke up the residents who took the matter into their own hands.
Police recovered knives, daggers and machetes they had used to threaten the residents.
The bodies of the four robbers were taken to the Coast General Hospital Mortuary in Mombasa.
Police in Mombasa said that most armed gangsters are part of local radicalised youth. The gangs are always armed with crude weapons and attack business people, passers-by, commuters and even law enforcers insider the estates.
In February 2020, police ganged down two suspected robbers who were suspected to be terrorising the residents. The duo was linked to three separate incidences at the Coast.
On January 17, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced a comprehensive new strategy to deal with terror groups such as Al-Shabaab and radical extremism in the country. The new structure focused on multi-agency coordination, advanced training and equipment upgrades, community involvement and incentives for security officers.
"We understand that in a dynamic operating environment characterized by emerging and asymmetrical threats, investment in modern technology and cutting-edge training is instrumental for 21st Century law enforcement," Uhuru said on Thursday, November 19 while speaking in Kitui County.
