Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua's plan to build a Ksh250 million airport is awaiting approval by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA).

In May 2020, Mutua told Kenyans.co.ke that he had already secured Ksh100 million from the Machakos County Assembly budget allocation and was seeking more funds.

The construction design of the airport - according to the project reported forwarded to NEMA in May 2021 - stated that the airport will be built on a 104 hectares parcel of land - about 8 percent of the land in which Mutua wants to build Machakos City.

It will also comprise passenger and presidential or VVIP terminals, a taxiway, hotels and restaurants and a water treatment plant.

The passenger terminal will consist of six passenger boarding bridges, immigration counters for arrival and departure, 10 check-in counters, six security checkpoints and 10 gates.

"The runway will be 1350m long and 45m wide. At both ends of the runway, a stop way will be constructed.

"The runway shoulders will be 7.5m wide and a Runway End Safety Area (RESA) of 180m length and 160m width will be provided at both ends of the runway," the project detailed.

Machakos County will proceed with the project once it receives a final environmental decision for the proposed project(s) from NEMA. KAA will also analyse whether the project certifies its standards and special purpose laws.

"Our new airport will start as a regional airport and within a few years, it will go international. It will be an alternative to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) when IT is closed.

"We are upgrading Machakos to an international area to benefit our people and make them rich," Mutua told Kenyans.co.ke

Machakos City will be built under the Long Term Local Physical Development Plan for Machakos New Town. Its designs will be similar to the concept adopted in Dubai and Singapore.

This includes skyscrapers, luxurious residential areas, the modern airport and the People's Park which will cost Ksh73 million.
