Kangemi Matatu Owners (KMO) SACCO has been suspended for a period of two weeks.
Sources who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke indicated that the SACCO was suspended after an incident where one of their drivers was accused of causing the death of Meline Waithera Njoroge, the daughter of Deputy Inspector General Edward Njoroge.
The vehicles will have to undergo mandatory inspection and their crew members will be forced to produce valid documents before they are allowed back on the road.
"KMO SACCO suspension is wrong and unjust. Why should the entire sACCO carry the cross because of an accident? Anyway may justice prevail to both parties," Samson Njoroge posed on a group on Facebook.
Another businessman by the name John Njuguna relayed his condolence message to the bereaved family, noting that the whole SACCO regretted the incident.
"I'm writing this as an innocent investor who is affected so much by the directive to remove all our vehicles from the road. We have got family responsibility, loans and have experienced job losses for over 1000 youths who are innocent and even didn't know what happened," Njuguna pleaded.
Patrick Macharia Magu, a matatu driver who was arrested following Waithera's accident was released on a cash bail of Ksh 300,000.
He is accused of reversing irresponsibly, therefore, causing the death of Waithera who was sandwiched between two matatus along Tom Mboya street, Maragua Lane in Nairobi’s CBD on June 17th.
During Waithera's burial service, Interior CS Fred Matiang'i warned that those involved in Waithera's death would face the consequences.
Matiang'i stated that the incident was a reminder of vices that had cropped up in the society that needed to be nipped in the bud.
"This is someone who was just walking on the pavement of a road and some fellow who was driving at a place he was not supposed to, hit her. That is how this child met her death...
""It is moments like this that we are reminded that some of us engage in conduct and behavior that gets us here. Now we are burying a very promising young girl," Matiang'i stated.
