  • Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna was in Isiolo on Thursday, August 5 to inspect the progress of the upgrade of Isiolo Airport into an international airport.

    The airport is part of three airports set to be constructed in the Lamu Port, South Sudan, Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET) project. Other airports include Manda Airport in Lamu and Turkana Airport.

    Images seen by Kenyans.co.ke revealed significant progress in the construction of Isiolo International Airport.

    The new building is complete with high windows allowing ample lighting. The images reveal a well-finished reception area with stalls available for letting to air travel companies and other businesses.

    In addition, the airport's arrival section is also ready, awaiting its first clients. 

    Isiolo Airport was officially opened on 23rd July, 2017 by President Uhuru Kenyatta. It is located on the border of Isiolo and Meru counties and half of the runway extends to Meru County. 

    The airport is located 283 kilometres from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by road and 200 kilometres by air.

    A cargo facility intended for miraa and other perishable farm produce is also under construction. The airport also has the potential to connect the region to other international destinations like Somalia, Middle East and others. 

    Currently the airport has chartered flights to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy under the umbrella of Northern Rangelands Trust have expressed interest in utilizing the airport for tourists’ movement to and from and Mwanza in Tanzania.

    Isiolo International Airport has also created opportunities for the local population and provides attachments for students to gain experience in aviation-related disciplines.

    As a result of the upgrading of the airport, security in the area has also improved. In addition, the commercial value of the land around the airport has also increased.
