The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General, Francis Atwoli, now claims that former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, is gaining ground on Deputy President, William Ruto.
Speaking during an interview with TV47 on Wednesday, January 19, Atwoli opined the Azimio la Umoja patriarch was now at par with the DP in the Mount Kenya region.
This, he revealed, is according to the COTU Department of Economic Education and Research.
"At COTU, we have numbers, which are not made public for obvious reasons. The head of the department intimated to me that at the moment, Raila and Ruto are neck to neck," Atwoli revealed.
The COTU boss noted that by April, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, would surpass the country's Second-in-Command in the region's popularity contest.
"By the time we get to April, Raila would have overtaken Ruto," he declared.
Atwoli reiterated that the DP would not become Kenya's fifth president noting that he (Ruto) was not as popular as he thought and should not bank on the numbers in his political rallies.
"People go to rallies for various reasons. Some go to put a face to the name, asking if this is the Ruto I hear about.
"Others go because they hear he dishes out money, while some go for t-shirts. Those are not votes. The real votes will be seen on August 9, 2022," he remarked.
A poll by Infotrak released on December 27, 2021 placed the ODM leader ahead of Ruto in regards to nationwide popularity.
Odinga garnered 33 per cent, registering an upward trajectory of 20 per cent since 2020 while Ruto, who was popular with 44 of 100 Kenyans, dropped to 32 per cent.
