The houses are expected to ease the backlog of housing in Nairobi especially in the Eastlands area dotted with dilapidated government houses.

The project to construct affordable structures in the city was launched in June 2020 to meet the demand for low cost housing in Nairobi.

Speaking of its progress on Wednesday, February 16, NMS Deputy Director of Housing and Urban Renewal Marion Rono stated the project is geared towards promoting sustainable and affordable neighbourhoods, which is part of President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big Four Agenda.

She revealed that all units under the affordable housing bracket each valued at Ksh1 million are all sold out.

The NMS official stated that the Jeevanjee affordable housing project has 1,830 units with one bedroom, two bedrooms, and three bedrooms houses.

The Pangani project on the other hand has 1,562 units which the majority have already been bought through the affordable housing programme run by NMS.

"We have embarked on the development of 10 estates where we are erecting an additional  60,000 houses in the following estates; Woodley, Bahati, ,Maringo, Jericho, Lumumba, Ziwani, Embakasi, California, Kariobangi, and Bondeni to address housing backlog in Nairobi," NMS stated.

The start of this construction comes just days after NMS announced facelift plans in some Nairobi estates.

So far, the renovations have been done on 760 units in Kariobangi South, Buruburu, Jamhuri, and Kariokor estates.

NMS led by Major Gen. Mohamed Badi further stated that the construction work had created employment opportunities for many Kenyans.

"Service delivery has created over 100,000 Jobs. The construction of Grogan Road from Globe Roundabout to Kariokor has ensured ease of doing business in the area, directly and positively contributed to interventions of addressing the Street Families State of Affairs," Badi stated.
