Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a traffic disruption on the section of Eastern Bypass and Kangundo Road junction.

Through a public notice issued on Tuesday, March 1, KURA stated the section of that road will be closed for a period of two months running from Thursday, March 3 to Tuesday, May 3.

The closure will pave way for the bridge construction and dualling of the Eastern Bypass.

"The Kenya Urban Roads Authority wishes to notify the general public that a section of the Eastern Bypass at the Kangundo Road junction overpass will be closed for bridge construction," part of the statement read.

Motorists heading to Embakasi have since been advised to consider using the diverted slip road below the overpass.

"Motorists and pedestrians are advised to be careful when approaching this section and strictly follow diversions as guided by the traffic signs and the traffic marshals on site."

"We request the public to be patient as we work to improve road safety and enhance urban mobility," KURA stated.

The expansion of the Eastern Bypass into a dual carriage started in 2021 with the government setting aside Ksh12.5 billion for the project.

KURA noted that the construction will ease traffic on the key road linking Mombasa Road to Thika Superhighway.  The 28-kilometre road stretches through City Cabanas, Pipeline, Utawala, and Ruiru.

The closure affects traffic flow along those routes and also some parts of Mombasa road, especially around City Cabanas. The need to expand the road was necessitated by the development of commercial real estate projects along Eastern Bypass and Kangundo road. Also, the movement of goods and people along that route has greatly contributed to its dualling.

Its expansion comes even as the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) readies to officially open the Nairobi Expressway in March 2022.
