The number of Kenyan businessmen joining the enviable list of billionaires continues to grow with the majority making a fortune in various sectors of the economy.
The list entails a who-is-who across the divide with similar names appearing multiple times. Others, however, may not be easy to spot.
However, unknown to many, some of these billionaires, who shy away from the limelight, have the same bloodline. Kenyans.co.ke takes a look at these billionaires who are related.
Suzanne Gachukia x Eddah Gachukia
Arguably, one of the families set to be placed in the annals of history for their contribution to the education sector, the Gachukias have seemingly done it all.
Prof. Eddah Gachukia, alongside her husband, Daniel Gachukia, founded the Riara Group of Schools in 1974- which has since blossomed to become a prestigious institution which consist of kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and university.
Their daughter, Suzanne, is the CEO of her own music label, Sub-Sahara Limited. Having studied music in the United States of America, Suzanne later formed a trio band, Zanazziki. She is married to the Kenyan ambassador to Ireland, Richard Opembe.
Manu Chandaria x Keshav Chandaria
Business mogul Manu Chandaria is no stranger to success as he has made billions in his career and built a business empire like no other. The businessman is credited for launching Comcraft Group which has since grown from a single unit to branches in over 40 countries.
Unknown to many, Manu's elder brother, Keshav, is also establishing himself in the manufacturing industry. The Indian native has also set up manufacturing plants locally, Rwanda, Bujumbura, Congo and in South Africa.
He is also renowned for his philanthropic nature, collaborating with the Rotary club in Toronto, Canada, to distribute wheelchairs to Africa and India, cancer equipment to South America as well as dental equipment to his native land in Mumbai.
Adil Popat and Shelina Popat
The Popats' business empire stretches back to the 1930s with their patriarch, Charthubhai Popat, opening a hardware shop beside the Nairobi Railway station. Currently, the family is credited to multiple businesses including the prestigious Villa Rosa Kempinski hotel.
Adil Popat manages Simba Corporation, that is responsible for assembling Mahindra Scorpio Single and Double Cabin pick ups. His sister, Shelina Popat, has also established herself in various industries.
She worked as a model for French luxury iconic label, Christian Dior, before moving to the Kenya Embassy in Paris, as a tourist Liaison officer. She has also interests in multiple ventures including Westlands' Bollywood Casino.
Uhuru Kenyatta x Peter Kihanya Muiruri
It is no secret that former President Uhuru Kenyatta's family is among the wealthiest in the country- with the recent report by Oxfam International placing them as the fourth richest with a net worth of Ksh60 billion ($530 million).
However, in 2020, it was discovered that the Head of State's second cousin, had acquired stakes in three companies linked to a multinational betting company.
