Among prominent Kenyans who were part of those honoured at the event that was held at the All Saints Cathedral include Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant, Agnes Kagure, and retired Kenya Air Force Captain, Collins Wanderi.

"Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Sovereign Head of the Order of St John, sanctioned Honors to a number of St John Kenya volunteers for their distinguished services rendered in the service of humanity in various capacities and responsibilities to St John," read the statement in part.

The event was graced by President Uhuru Kenyatta and presided over by Mt Kenya South Canon, Charles Muturi, who is the patron of the organisation.

On his part, Uhuru congratulated the awardees and promised that the government would amend St John Ambulance Act to improve the partnership between the government and the institution.

"I want to congratulate all those awarded for their highly significant admittance into this noble order. May your sacrifices be an inspiration to others.

"The ministry of health, Treasury, and the Attorney General will formulate amendments to the St John Ambulance of Kenya Act CAP 258 of the Laws of Kenya to deepen its partnership with the state by providing a framework for exchequer support, the president declared.

The act was enacted by Parliament in 1979 after a bill to recognise the institution in the country was introduced by the late Charles Njonjo, who was the then Attorney General.
