The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has picked Mohamed Mdigo Mwamkale to contest for the Rabai parliamentary seat following the death of area MP, William Kamoti.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday, May 31, Kilifi County ODM Chairperson, Teddy Mwambire, confirmed that the party had settled on Mwamkale, the late Kamoti's younger brother, as its preferred candidate.
Mwambire stated that Mwamkale's name had been forwarded to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for clearance.
"We are waiting for IEBC to clear him after which we will be ready to battle for the seat. We are confident of winning," Mwambire, who is the former Mariakani Town Council Chair, stated.
The announcement comes after ODM party leader and Azimio La Umoja One Kenya presidential flagbearer, Raila Odinga, directed that the seat be reserved for Kamoti's family, asking them to submit a name to the party officials in the county.
"As I conclude, Kamoti submitted his papers to IEBC on May 29 and there is only one day left. I would like to the leaders in Kilifi to discuss with the family so that you give us someone who will carry ODM's flag in Rabai so that he or she submits their papers by tomorrow," he instructed on Monday, May 30.
Raila eulogized Kamoti as a wise leader, whom he regarded as a brother. The former Prime Minister promised to ensure that the MP's family is well taken care of.
"He has left behind a wife and children. I will personally ensure that his children continue with their education until completion. We will pull together and ensure that we help you," he stated.
Kamoti, who was the sitting MP, died in a tragic road accident along the Mombasa - Malindi highway on his way home after being cleared by the electoral commission to defend his seat.
Politicians led by President Uhuru Kenyatta condoled with the lawmaker's family, with the Head of State describing Kamoti as a brilliant, devoted, progressive leader with an impressive record.
"It is very unfortunate and painful that we've suddenly lost Mheshimiwa William Kamoti. He leaves behind a strong legacy of development and public service, especially in the area of education where he initiated several schools in his constituency,"
"To the family of Mheshimiwa Kamoti, his friends, relatives and the people of Rabai Constituency, may God the Almighty comfort you all at this difficult period of mourning your kin and leader," the President condoled.
