Fresh details have emerged on the troubled past of the Embu politician, Dennis Mbae, who was sprayed with over 20 bullets on the busy Bonanza area, Embu town by unknown gunmen on Wednesday, June 8.
According to preliminary reports extracted from court files, Mbae was allegedly battling cases of drug trafficking, robbery with violence, and murder.
His court cases date back to May 5, 2014, when he was implicated in a murder case after a businessman was found murdered at his home in Shauri estate, Embu. He was charged alongside four others.
They denied the charges before Justice Florence Muchemi arguing that they were only arrested for selling unlicensed liquor. The case is still pending in court.
"I agree with the prosecution that the evidence to support the charges need not be included in the particulars of the offence," ruled Justice Muchemi on the illegal liquor business.
In 2018, he was again arrested and charged for trafficking bhang valued at Ksh260,000. Detectives investigating the case argued that they had trailed him for over 3 months. He was linked to a syndicate trafficking drugs to neighbouring countries.
He denied the charges and was released on a Ksh300,000 bail. The case is still pending in court.
In January this year, one of his friends, a senior officer attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation unit was kidnapped and later found dead. It is reported that Mbae enjoyed police protection while running his errands.
Taking a reformation path, Mbae took a stab at Kirimari Ward seat during the 2017 General Election. He sought to join active politics under the Maendeleo Chap Chap party but lost to Morris Muchiri in party nominations.
According to police reports on an attack that was carried out just a few kilometers from his home, Mbae's attackers fled with a vehicle that had no registration number.
"It is true the trader was heading home when he was fatally attacked by people whose vehicle had no registration numbers. We have commenced investigations with a view of establishing the truth of the matter," Embu West Sub County police boss, Julius Kyumbule, stated.
The news of his demise was received with mixed feelings as a section of Embu residents thronged the mortuary to confirm if he was truly dead, with some celebrating the bad news.
At the same time, his family has not addressed his murder yet. The body is lying at Embu Level 5 hospital as police continue with investigations.
