One of Kenya's leading arbitrators, Dr Kariuki Muigua, and his son, James Ngotho Kariuki, were honoured for their contributions in the third annual prestigious Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) awards held in Kigali, Rwanda. 

Muigua and his son Kariuki scooped the African Arbitrator of the Year 2022 and Africa's Young Arbitration Practitioner of the Year 2022 Awards respectively. 

The duo emerged top, beating candidates from other countries such as Rwanda, Mauritius, Nigeria, and Ethiopia among others.

Muigua, a notable law scholar, is a seasoned and an established mediator and arbitrator with extensive experience in both international and national matters. 

According to his company profile, he has served over 26 years as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and is still practicing at Kariuki Muigua & Co. Advocates. 

"The firm that specialises in environmental law and natural resources research and practice, ADR, constitutional law and commercial law litigation.

The firm is also listed as a leading Kenyan commercial law firm in the distinguished Martindale Hubbell Directory," his profile reads. 

He holds a PhD in law from the University of Nairobi (UoN) and is a lecturer at the university. He has also collaborated with various environmental advocacy groups in Kenya and other neighbouring countries such as the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA). 

"He advocates the setting up of effective policy, legislative and institutional frameworks for the resolution of environmental conflicts."

On the other hand, Kariuki is the chairperson of the Young Members Group (YMG) of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and one of the leading Dispute Resolution Lawyers in Kenya.
