Kenyan Lawyer Lands Top Commonwealth Job

Kenyan lawyer, Luis Franceschi, has been appointed as the Assistant Secretary General for the Commonwealth of Nations headquartered in the United Kingdom.

Franceschi landed the role having served at the international body as the Senior Director of Governance and Peace since January 2020.

News of Franceschi's appointment was announced by the Kenyan High Commissioner to the UK, Manoah Esipisu, who revealed that the Professor had landed the job days after the international body held a conference in Kigali, Rwanda.

"Congratulations Prof Luis Franceschi on your appointment. I wish you all the best in this new role and look forward to our continued engagements," Esipisu stated.

On his part, Franceschi expressed his gratitude for the appointment even as he stated that he was looking forward to his new role.

As the Director of Governance, the Kenyan lawyer was tasked with coordinating electoral reforms and promotion of good governance among the organisation's member states.

Before joining Commonwealth, Franceschi served as a dean at the Strathmore school of law for over 16 years.

Additionally, he was listed as a scholar by prestigious universities including University of Oxford and the University of California.

His sterling career has been credited to his intellect, which has also seen him bag jobs with some of the top global bodies such as the United Nations.

"My area of expertise focuses on innovation in legal education, judicial transformation and comparative constitutional law. I have written widely on the convergence between Constitutional law and Public International Law “the constitutional regulation of the foreign affairs power”. 

"I have been a legal advisor to several national and international government agencies, commissions and programmes, including international and regional courts, the United Nations and the World Bank,"  Franceschi stated on his LinkedIn.

Commonwealth is a global body founded in 1931 and has over 54 countries that were colonised by Britain.
