Azimio La Umoja presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, has pledged to investigate Deputy President William Ruto’s source of wealth if he wins the August 9 polls.

Raila questioned the legality of Ruto’s land ownership in the country while addressing Taita Taveta residents on Tuesday, July 12.

He claimed that Ruto illegally acquired 2,500 acres of land in Taveta Sub County despite the DP arguing that he legally bought the land from former Taveta Member of Parliament, Basil Criticos.

Azimio wants Ruto's Taita Taveta land and other parcels allegedly acquired controversially reverted back to the government.

“He keeps on saying that Criticos has issues servicing a loan and he rescued him. In return, Criticos gave him the 2,500 acres. Is 2,500 acres just a piece of land worth brushing off?

“Why didn’t he purchase land from thousands of landlords in this area, then allocate the land to squatters?” Raila wondered.

“He has diverted all the water to his farm. Our strict Martha Karua will handle the issue as DP,” Suna East Member of Parliament, Junet Mohamed, added.

Mombasa Governor, Hassan Ali Joho, rallied the Azimio brigade to launch a probe into the matter.

“We will investigate Ruto. The land will be reverted back to the local community. When we take over the government in August, we will repossess the land belonging to the DP.

“We will also probe the owner of the land who sold it to Ruto. Why didn’t he sell the land to locals?” Joho wondered.

Martha Karua and Wiper leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, declined to address the issue but poked holes into Ruto’s manifesto and the bottom-up economic model.
