Kenyans will enjoy an extended festive season after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki confirmed two days as public holidays.

Kindiki confirmed to the press on Thursday, December 22, that Tuesday, December 27 and Monday, January 2, will be observed as public holidays

He explained that December 27 followed Sunday December 25 and Monday, December 26, which are listed as holiday days under the Kenya holiday events calendar.

January 1, which is also regarded as a public holiday globally fell on a Sunday pushing the holiday to Monday, January 2, 2023.

The directive is in line with section 4 of the Public Holidays Act that provides that if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following day will automatically become a public holiday.

"Where, in any year, a day in Part I of the Schedule falls on a Sunday, then the first succeeding day, not being a public holiday, shall be a public holiday and the first-mentioned day shall cease to be a public holiday," reads the act in part.

The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA)  also confirmed the two public holidays in a statement signed by its CEO Dr Habil Olaka.

"The Kenya Bankers Association wishes to confirm that Tuesday, 27th December 2022, is a Public Holiday to mark Christmas Day pursuant to section 4 of the Public Holidays Act when a public holiday falls on a Sunday.

"The same will apply to Monday, January 2, 2023, with respect to new year’s holiday," read the statement in part.
