Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was relieved of his duties as African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development following changes adopted by the continental body.
Raila's term ended after African Union announced that the African Union Development Agency - NEPAD had taken over the mandate.
In a letter, African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Moussa Faki lauded Raila for his exemplary performance.
He also revealed plans to engage the former Prime Minister in other assignments.
"The transformation of the Agency to African Union Development Agency (NEPAD) has now been completed, with a full mandate to implement the Continental agenda on infrastructure," the letter read in part.
Raila, in a close rejoinder, welcomed the decision by the continental body.
"I indicated the challenges to my continued availability for the role of AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.
"In that regard, I welcome your quick action that will free me to pursue other pressing and urgent matters," Raila's statement read in part.
Privileges and Perks
Before NEPAD was empowered to take over the roles, Raila was entitled to hefty perks and privileges. But with the adopted changes, Raila is set to forego the privileges.
As African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development , Raila had an office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which was set to facilitate his travel to different countries.
The former prime minister also had access to special visa and preferential treatment on various airports while on official duties.
Reports indicated that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader was entitled to a fully-furnished office in Nairobi.
According to further reports, Raila was assigned staff and advisors to boost his local and international presence. Additional staff and advisors were also assigned to help align with African Union unity programmes.
However, it was not clearly indicated how much Raila earned monthly or annually as African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development.
Key Proposals to AU During His Tenure
As African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development, Raila advocated for trans-African highways, high speed rail networks, open skies, energy creation, fiber optic cable connections, and water transport.
To fund the projects, the former Prime Minister explained the importance of setting up African infrastructure funds using sovereign, insurance, and pensions funds.
During a round table discussion with Corporate Council on Africa in April 25, 2022, Raila stressed the importance of creating public private partnerships to help fund different infrastructure projects in the continent.
