A group of Kenyans have started a challenge involving climbing the 33-storey Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

The goal of the challenge is to climb the stairs up and down from basement to rooftop, as many times as you can in 2 hours.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Mary Wangui, the event organiser explained that the exercise embraces all levels of fitness.

“The challenge happens every second Saturday of the month, we have a group called Staircase Challenge which is part of a larger group called Heels on Mountains.

“Averagely, 25 to 50 Kenyans join the event every month but it is open for anyone who is willing to join,” she told Kenyans.co.ke.

Preparations

Wangui explains that climbing the staircases can be strenuous and advises Kenyans willing to join to prepare adequately.

“It is recommended for people to prepare for a challenge by either doing 5+ flights of stairs daily or brisk walking/running/jogging on steep terrain three times a week,” she advises.

On the experience, Kiprono Leting one of the participants revealed, “The first time is excruciating but then your body adjusts and it becomes a very good exercise.”

Another participant explained her first experience, “The first two reps were gruesome then your body picks up and it is exhilarating.”

How to join

Willing participants meet at KICC at 7.00 AM, where they start with a warm-up and stretch till 7.30.

The challenge runs from 7.30-9.30 AM, then a warm down and stretching from 9.30-10.00 AM.

There is a charging fee of Ksh750 which carters for entry fee, trainer, water, mints, fruits and glucose.
