It has undeniably been a remarkable year for star athlete Faith Kipyegon, as she elevated Kenya's athletic prowess to new heights through her trailblazing achievements.

Kipyegon etched her name in history books by shattering records in both the 1,500m and 5,000m competitions in 2023, solidifying her status as a global sensation. 

The breakthrough moment occurred at the Florence Diamond League in June when she clocked a time of 3.49.11, setting a new record in the 1,500m race.

Continuing her dominance, Kipyegon achieved yet another milestone at the Paris Diamond League on June 9, triumphing in the 5,000 metres race with a record-breaking time of 14.05.20, earning her a noteworthy cash prize of Ksh1.5 million. 

Reflecting on her achievement, Kipyegon expressed her surprise at setting a world record and emphasised her relaxed approach throughout the race.

Her prowess extended to the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where she clinched the gold medal, bringing home a substantial prize of Ksh10.1 million. 

The Monaco Diamond League in July witnessed Kipyegon's excellence as she set a mile world record of 4.07.64. 

Additionally, at the Doha Diamond League in May, she clocked a lead time of 3.58.57 in the 1,500-metre race.

In recognition of her outstanding contributions to athletics, President William Ruto honoured Kipyegon, alongside other record-breaking athletes. 

The president bestowed upon her a generous reward of Ksh5 million, a 3-bedroom house in Parklands, Ksh5 million for breaking the 1,500-metre world record, and Ksh6 million for shattering the 5,000-meter world record.

Further attesting to her stellar year, Kipyegon secured the prestigious 2023 World Athlete of the Year Award in the women's category.
