A bus ferrying passengers to Lodwar veered off the road and rammed into roadside vendors killing four and injuring one person.
The bus, which was travelling to Lodwar from Nairobi through Kitale, veered off the road after losing control when it rammed into women selling milk by the roadside.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Turkana South Deputy County Commissioner Gideon Ombongi confirmed that the accident occurred at around 7:00 am. An Officer in Charge of Police Division (OCPD) was part of the passengers.
“An OCPD stationed within the county was one of the passengers in the bus having travelled from Nairobi. However, he was not injured," the DCC stated.
“Four people were killed in the accident including a 14-year-old girl who was purchasing milk at the scene," he added.
Ombongi also confirmed that the injured woman is currently receiving treatment at the Lodwar County and Referral Hospital. Bodies of the deceased have since been taken to the mortuary of the same facility.
It was also confirmed that one of the women who were killed in the accident was a Nyumbi Kumi agent.
In a separate incident that occurred on Friday evening, three people lost their lives after they were involved in a road accident along the Eldoret-Kitale road.
The accident was a head-on collision between a matatu and a boda boda at Moi’s Bridge area in Trans Nzoia County.
Reports on the accident also confirmed that the driver tried to avoid hitting a pothole when he collided with the boda boda rider.
These accidents have occurred at a time when the country is witnessing increased fatalities on the road owing to a spike in travel activities witnessed during the festive season.
Kenyans have been urged to be more vigilant on the road after the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, issued a travel advisory for this festive season.
