2023 was an extremely successful year for Kenyan sportsmen and women who flew the country's flag high on the global stage.
Top of the list was record-breaking athlete Faith Kipyegon who cemented her status as one of the best Kenyan athletes of all time.
During the year, she smashed 2 world records, emerging as one of the most revered personalities of the year, not just in sports but across all sectors.
In June 2023, she set a new world record in the 1,500 metres category after clocking 3:49:11 in the Florence Diamond League.
A week later, her winning streak would continue after she set a record time at the Diamond League in Paris, France.
Kipyegon stunned the world a month later after shattering the mile world record by clocking 4:07:64 at the Monaco Diamond League.
Following her achievements, President William Ruto awarded her Ksh5 million and a three-bedroom house worth Ksh6 million.
In October 2023, Kenyan marathoner Kelvin Kiptum became the first man to break the 2:01:09 record set by legend Eliud Kipchoge at the Chicago Marathon.
The athlete clocked 2:00:35 - an astounding feat for any marathoner.
The achievement led to Kenyans drawing parallels between him and Kipchoge who is considered the best marathoner of all time.
Kipchoge and Kiptum are set to face off at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Kenya’s dominance did not end there.
In May 2023, Africa's fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala set a world record of 9.83 seconds in the 100-metre race at the Kip Keino Classic held in Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.
The victory was lauded by President Ruto and Azimio's Raila Odinga who were cheering on at the stands.
Omanyala, who had a quiet season following the victory promised to exceed all expectations in the upcoming 2024 season.
He recently appointed strength and conditioning coach Geoffrey Kimani, replacing longtime coach Duncan Ayiemba as he looks to assert his dominance.
