Nairobi Residents Among Lowest Radio Listeners in Kenya - Report

A report by the Communication Authority of Kenya (CA) has revealed the regions in the country that have the highest number of radio listeners and TV viewers.

According to the Kenya Media Landscape Report (May-September 2023),  South Nyanza emerged as the region with the highest number of radio listeners with a rate of 85 per cent.

Conversely, Nairobi County was ranked among the regions with the lowest radio listeners countrywide.

Nairobi has a radio consumer rate of 61 per cent. The city only topped North Eastern Kenya which was rated at 54 per cent.

Top Radio Listeners

Coming second after South Nyanza was the Lake region at 84 per cent. The lake region encompasses Siaya, Kisumu, and Homa Bay counties.

South Nyanza, on the other hand, encompasses the counties of Migori, Kisii and Nyamira.

Rift Valley residents were ranked as the third highest region with radio listeners at a rate of 83 per cent. Western came in fourth at 82 per cent while Central has an audience of 81 per cent.

"The lowest incidence of radio listenership is recording in North Eastern. There is also higher listenership in rural areas.

"Swahili stations have a higher listenership in the Western and Coast topographies. Listenership of vernacular stations is highest in the Lake and Lower Eastern topographies," the report read in part.

TV Viewers

Regarding television, Nairobi country was among the leading regions in TV viewership.

"Viewership of TV is highest in Upper Eastern (87 per cent) followed by Central (83 per cent) and Nairobi topographies (80 per cent). The lowest incidence of TV Viewership is North Eastern. The viewership of TV is higher in urban areas.

"Viewership of TV is higher amongst males than females. Those aged 15 to 17 years have lower viewership as they are likely to be in school," read the report in part.

In the fourth and fifth position were the Rift Valley (74 per cent) and Lake Region (73 per cent).
