Meru County Deputy Speaker Mwenda Ali's six-year-old daughter on Tuesday, April 2, died in a road accident along the Meru-Nairobi Highway.
Reports indicated that Ali's vehicle, a Subaru, burst into flames after ramming into a Toyota Double Cabin in Embu.
Witnesses rushed to the scene in an attempt to put out the fire from the vehicle.
Ali, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, alongside his driver and another passenger were rushed to Ena Hospital for treatment and subsequently airlifted to Nairobi after their conditions worsened.
According to witnesses, they rushed to the scene after hearing a loud bang. Upon arrival, they found huge flames engulfing the Deputy Speaker's vehicle.
Efforts by the area locals to rescue the politician's daughter proved futile owing to the huge flames.
Reports also indicated that the Deputy Speaker sustained dire injuries with a deep cut on his forehead and a dislocated left knee.
Police officers who arrived at the scene confirmed that investigations were launched to establish the cause of the accident.
The incident highlighted the spike in road accidents in the past weeks. Barely 24 hours earlier, two separate accidents claimed 11 lives.
The first involved a collision of five vehicles along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, which claimed ten lives.
The second accident involved a bus carrying students from Chavakali Boys High School which overturned at Mamboleo Junction in Kisumu.
One student succumbed to the injuries while those nursing injuries were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital for medical treatment.
