Atheists in Kenya have threatened to sue the registrar of societies for refusing to register them as an official body.
In particular, the Atheists In Kenya Society has said it will file a suit against the Deputy Registrar of Societies Joseph Onyango claiming that he has repeatedly refused to register them, despite their having met all the requirements for registration.
Speaking to The Star, the group’s chairman Harrison Mumia said that Onyango refused to register them, citing that the Preamble of the Kenyan constitution recognizes the supremacy of God.
He further said that the argument was in violation of rights as The Bill of Rights protects atheists and allows them to form an association.
The move by the atheist group comes a few months after the homosexuals and lesbians society moved to high court and filed a suit against the registrar of societies for refusing to register them as a lobby group.
The high court ordered that the group be registered, which came as a landmark for the group as this was the first time they were allowed to register.
