Popular comedian Daniel Ndambuki, commonly referred to as Churchill, has issued an apology after a prank pulled on his Sunday night show went horribly wrong among its viewers.
Churchill Show was heavily criticised on social media following a stunt in which the program was advertising a product. The dramatised promotion performed by comedian Zeddy and her male colleague Jasper rubbed netizens the wrong way over the language they used which was termed as lewd.
The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) boss, Ezekiel Mutua, confirmed that Churchill had personally contacted him to apologise for the 'adulterated prank'.
"I have received a call from Mwalimu King'ang'i this morning regarding the unfortunate episode of the Churchill Show last night. He has apologised and taken full responsibility and requested that I pull down my post," Mutua said.
Mr Mutua sharply condemned the top comedian stating: "That prank, plus the Meru-accent-laden village wags' 'dirty talk' disguised as bicycle ride is against the Programming Code for Free-to-air radio and television service in Kenya. This is a family show and it airs during the watershed period".
"To try and popularise it through cheap sex talk is a breach of the law and betrayal of trust of the program's family audience. Any celebrity who makes money by pushing dirty content to corrupt the moral values of our children is no better than the politicians looting our country its impunity and it's wrong!" he noted.
However, Mutua highlighted that despite the apology, KFCB would pursue the matter to ensure the mistake was not repeated and would mete out the necessary sanctions on the Show.
The KFCB CEO warned Churchill against using his platform to corrupt the morals of the society.
"Our message to you Churchill is simple: You are talented. You are a mentor to many. Mungu amekutoa mbali. Please don't use your talent to corrupt the moral values of our children. Give us clean content. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE OBSCENE TO BE POPULAR!" he concluded.
The third segment of the Sunday show was also not aired, something Churchill attributed to a 'technical hitch'.
"My apologies!!! The 3rd segment of the Churchill show could not air due some technical hitch," he posted on Facebook.
