Diani Tragedy Survivors Taken Back Home

49 surviving students from St Martins Boys traveled back to their school in Muranga County yesterday, for the last step of counseling after a harrowing experience.

The students arrived in somber mood, not oblivious of the fact that they were lucky to be alive, after even of their colleagues died in a holiday at the coast gone horribly wrong.

Seven students from the school drowned on Wednesday, after they were swept away by giant waves, while swimming at the Diani seafront in Kwale County.

Several measures had been put in place to help both the boys and the parents of those who had lost their lives, go through the traumatic experience.

A temporary counseling center was put up at Star of the Sea Primary School in Mombasa, where the grieving parents received counseled.

Red Cross and St John Ambulance volunteers on the other hand, counseled teachers and pupils who survived the tragedy at St Teresa Secondary School in Changamwe.

On Friday, the boys, all aged between 13 and 15 were taken back to school where a team of counselors was waiting for them.

Speaking to journalist, Deacon Herman Kihuha, who was among the reception team, said the counseling was proving to be successful as the boys were showing signs of going bout normal activities.

The school is set to hold a mass at today, before releasing the students to their parents, for the remainder of the school holiday.
