Jubilee Deeply Divided Over Waiguru

Deep cracks have emerged in the Jubilee Coalition as lawmakers on Thursday took opposing stands with regard to the calls for the dismissal of Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru.

House Majority leader Aden Duale, led by a group of 10 MPs supporting the embattled CS, shifted the blame to Principal Secretary in the Ministry, Peter Mangitifor the reported procurement irregularities.

Duale claimed that Mangiti released the document that revealed how the Ministry spent Billions on outrageous purchases.

They further blamed the Opposition for damaging the reputation of the government with fictitious figures.

However, another faction within the Jubilee camp led by Mukurweini MP Kabando Wa Kabando asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to drop CS Waiguru as she was tainting his Government.

Kabando is said to be among 28 Jubilee MPs who are now leading the charge to remove CS Waiguru from office. Some of the legislators in the movement include: Mithika Linturi (Igembe South), Humphrey Njuguna (Gatanga), Peter Gitau (Mwea), Joseph M'Eruaki (Igembe North), Kanini Kega (Kieni) and Kigo Njenga (Gatundu North).

"I have always questioned the President on why he keeps protecting this particular CS, yet she keeps giving the Jubilee government a bad name. Anything calling for her resignation I am in support," said Linturi.

The MPs vowed to support the impeachment motion driven by Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter to eject Ms Waiguru from office, in case the President failed to fire her. They added that Kenyans were an angry lot following the many cases of graft under her watch.

On Tuesday, the Parliamentary Accounts Committee set the ball rolling after it revealed to the nation that the Devolution Ministry spent Sh1.7 Million on touch screen television, Sh3.8 Million on carpets and 18 condom dispensers at Sh450,000 among others. In the list, there was also the purchase of an office piano at Sh235,500 which the CS strongly opposed.

In her defense, Waiguru said that she was not in charge of procurement in the Ministry, sentiments that have been critised by different quarters, who argued that she was the CEO of the Ministry and ought to know what her juniors were up to.
