Sh3 Million Cars Burn in Another Police Station Fire

A huge inferno on Saturday night razed down vehicles worth millions of shillings at the Machakos Police Sation, barely a day after guns, ammunition and court documents were gutted down by a fire that erupted at the Naivasha police station.

In the Machakos incident, the fire is reported to have emerged from one of the vehicles that were packed at the station after being impounded over for traffic offences.

Confirming the incident, the station’s deputy traffic base commander Mr Jack Ila, stated that the fire, whose cause was not immediately established, spreading to four other vehicles.

The five vehicles that burnt down include a Nissan matatu, one min pick-up and three saloon cars.

Police Officers who were on duty at the time were reportedly alerted by a commotion ensuing outside, as members of the public were attracted to the scene.

Efforts by police and the residents to save the cars were thwarted as the fire kept on advancing, prompting intervention by the fire brigade.

''It was just luck that the fire machine arrived on time to contain the fire before it caused a much bigger damage,'' he said adding that the incident was the first of its kind at the station.

In Naivasha, six guns and over 400 rounds of ammunition were reduced to ashes. The fire, which broke out on Saturday morning at Longonot Police Station along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway, consumed the whole station that also stored court files and communication gadgets.
