Why Raila Cancelled Plan to Attend Wetangula's Event

CORD leader Raila Odinga on Saturday conspicuously missed the launch of co-principal Moses Wetang’ula’s presidential bid apparently because he was set to embark on a holiday in Tanzania.

Mr Odinga accompanied by his wife Ida Odinga and daughter Winnie Odinga flew to the neighbouring country after skipping Wetangula's event, which turned chaotic with several people being injured.

"Yesterday, my wife Ida, my daughter Winnie and I paid a courtesy call to Tanzania President H. E John Pombe Maghufuli at his rural home in Chato, Geita," Raila posted on Facebook.

The Office of the President in Tanzania indicated that the former Prime Minister landed at Chato Secondary School at around 5pm, then proceeded to meet Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli and his wife Janeth Magufuli at their home in Kilimani Village in Geita Province.

The Opposition Chief asserted that he had gone on holiday while at the same time visiting his family friend, President Magufuli.

Raila and other senior ODM politicians were expected to grace Wetangula’s function, but they all failed to show up.

The Bungoma Senator was launching his presidential bid at Muliro Gardens in Kakamega, but just when he was about to address the crowd, rowdy supporters of Ford Kenya and the Orange Democratic Party began heckling each other before a clash ensued.

Two people were injured after explosives went off amid a fierce clash between the warring factions.

Leaders in attendance including CORD co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka, Senators Bonny Khalwale and Omar Hassan among others, scampered for safety as the chaos spilt to the dias.

Meanwhile, political pundits have indicated that unity in the CORD coalition faces a huge test, following declared interests to run for the presidency by all its three principals.
