Wafula Chebukati Issues New Statement on Fresh Elections

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has stated that the electoral body is ready to conduct fresh elections in areas where the polls were nullified.

Speaking at Mombasa Law Courts after voting in the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) elections, Mr Chebukati divulged that they had anticipated by-elections.

“The commission is ready for by-elections since it is something we anticipated and budgeted for,” he remarked.

He also revealed that the commission had been given the go-ahead to conduct the LSK elections and had developed a better system.

“This time round the commission has moved a notch higher, the system we are using is an inbuilt system specifically for the LSK, which is foolproof in the sense that one cannot vote twice,” he added.

Almost 300 election petitions were filed after the election and at least four have been nullified.

On Thursday, the election of Embu Governor Martin Wambora was nullified after the High Court ruled that the process was marred by irregularities.

Lamu West MP Stanley Muthama of Maendeleo Chap Chap lost his seat on Wednesday while in Homa Bay, Governor Cyprian Awiti lost suffered the same fate after a successful petition by former Kasipul MP Oyugi Magwanga.

Awiti and his deputy, Hamilton Orata, stated that they were not satisfied with the judgement made by Justice Joseph Karanja who nullified the governor's election.

The county boss was further ordered to pay Sh2 Million to the petitioner, former Kasipul MP Joseph Magwanga.
