Governor Mike Sonko Gives 1,000 Government Jobs to Nairobi Youth

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Friday announced that he had successfully recruited 800 county constables and 200 firefighters to join the county teams.

The candidates were taken through a rigorous day-long recruitment exercise at Kasarani Stadium on Thursday where the 1,000 successful participants were selected.

The recruitment exercise was open to members of the public despite difficult weather conditions in a day that saw most city streets flooded with rain waters.

"For the first time in many years, the Nairobi City County government today (Friday) competitively and transparently employed 200 Firefighters and 800 Constables. This is in line with my pledge to create employment for the youth.

"The County’s Security, Compliance and Disaster Management Sector has been experiencing challenges in executing its core mandate of security, enforcement, compliance and disaster management due to the shortage of staff," the Governor's statement read in part.

He went on to assure residents that the recruits would be taken through the necessary training for their roles before they are posted.

"The recruits will undergo intensive and professional training in their respective fields and upon graduation will be deployed to boost the two departments.

"It is expected that the new recruits are up to the task and will work hand-in-hand with the current team to ensure service delivery is improved," Sonko assured.

The Governor noted that the new firefighters would help the county fire department to improve its services during major fire incidents within the city.

"The training will be conducted by professionals and will prepare them to work with the county’s fastest responding fire service considering that Nairobi has of late witnessed a number of fire outbreaks.

"As for the constables, the new batch is going to be trained on modern security matters and upon completion, the constables will treat people in a humane way," the statement explained.
