CS Fred Matiang'i Appears Before MPs Over Miguna Miguna's Deportation

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Tuesday morning appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Administration over the controversial second deportation of the self-proclaimed NRM-K Miguna Miguna.

The CS, together with the Principal Secretaries Karanja Kibicho (Interior) and General Gordon Kihalagwa (Immigration, Registration, and Border) are expected to give a report on the circumstances surrounding Miguna's deportation.

The trio is also to explain why they defied court orders not to deport Miguna, leading to their conviction and fining of Ksh 200,000 for contempt of court.

The committee, led by Kiambaa MP Paul Koinange, summoned the three following public outcry on the inhumane treatment of Miguna.

In his submissions, Matiang'i exclaimed, "The reason why Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet, did not present Miguna to court is that he was not in his custody.

"Miguna was not arrested by the police. He was being detained by the airport, " affirmed Matiang'i.

Miguna arrived in Toronto on Sunday after close to a week of drama at the Jomo Kenyatta International and Dubai airport and has vowed to return to Kenya as soon as he is done with medical tests.

One of his lawyers, Nelson Havi, stated that Miguna left Dubai on his own volition and with the assistance of the Canadian Consulate in the United Arab Emirates.

Through his twitter account, Havi noted that he will undergo toxicology tests and treatment for the chemicals used to sedate him and thereafter return.

Miguna was deported to Dubai after he declined to produce his Canadian passport and sign documents that would allow him entry into Kenya.
